Building a Human Resources Resume
As a human resources professional, you understand the necessity of a well designed and organized resume. Keep these points in mind as you create your new resume for your industry.
The format in which you present your information is important. The most common format is the Reverse Chronological approach where your experience is listed in order starting with your most recent position. While this is the most common, it is only useful if you have previous experience in the industry and if you are writing a professional resume. If you are new to the field, it is best to use another format that might highlight your skills better.
Another way to highlight your abilities if your experience is lacking is to use the Functional or Hybrid formats. These list your transferrable skills as well as any relevant education and training on the first page so that the reader takes notice of your talents without initially seeing your experience. Profile or Objective
Whatever position, whatever industry you are targeting, one of the most important elements to help you land your next job is how well you communicate your career goal. For example, if you give a brief overview of your capabilities in your profile paragraph but do not mention your intentions or career goals, the reader is left to filter through your information and experience to guess what you would be good at.
Since hiring managers spend less than a minute on average reviewing resumes, the better approach would be to clearly state your career goal such as Human Resources Generalist or Human Resources Manager, right from the beginning. Then the reader knows exactly what your intentions are and the rest of the information is further proof of your capabilities instead of a maze of confusion.
Key Qualifications & Core Competencies
There are many skills that a human resource professional needs in order to fulfill their job requirements. To show that you are capable of the filling the position, make sure to set aside a section to list your areas of expertise. These are often keywords that employers use to filter through online submitted resumes as well.
Including a list, in a well-organized manner, will not only show you have the capabilities but also put you at the top of the list for qualified candidates. Important keywords and expertise could include: benefits administration, change management, compensation, communication, employee relations, incentives, leadership development, performance evaluations, interviewing and hiring, recruitment, training and development, and union relations. These are just a few that you could include it you have relevant experience or training to back them up.
Education & Training
If you have specific education or training relating to human resources you might consider listing this section on the first page of your resume. If your experience is limited then showing that you have the training needed might be just the key to getting an interview. However, if your past experience is significant and you have ample accomplishments to show, keep your education at the end on the second page so that your other information takes priority. Clearly current and proven experience is valuable and should be listed first.
